Bowls for Bean's Cafe'

Silk Screen Image Transfer Experiments

From FVCS workshop held at Leola's Studio Friday 11/4/11.

Bowls for Bean's Cafe' Workshop
Success!

Fresh out of the kiln this morning. Check out these latest experiments from a FVCS workshop I taught this past Friday night. I asked students to experiment with the silk screen transfer papers on bisqued bowls that I had made to donate to Bean's Cafe' annual Empty Bowl fundraiser. (The fundraiser isn't until March, but this is when I have time to dedicated to making bowls for this event. I donate 250-500 bowls each year to help feed the hungry.)

The images were silk screened onto old sewing pattern paper using maison stains or underglazes mixed with extender printing medium. This technique is like the temporary tattoos you get in some gum wrappers. To transfer an image, place it ink side down on the pot, applying a small amount of water and then some pressure with a slightly damp sponge. After a few seconds of pressing, you peel off the paper and the silk screened image remains. Add other paint embellishments either before or after applying the tattoo transfer and walla! You have made a transfer on clay.
